Zy Alexander exits LSU game vs. South Carolina with injury

Zy Alexander went down with an injury in the fourth quarter of LSU‘s game against South Carolina Saturday. He was able to walk off the field under his own power.

However, he had his helmet off when he walked off, following getting tangled up with a Gamecocks’ wide receiver. It ended up being an offensive pass interference and LSU would get the ball back on a fumble recovery, trailing 33-29.

Alexander had an interception in the first quarter with South Carolina leading 7-0. He picked off LaNorris Sellers in the end zone.

Earlier this month, head coach Brian Kelly mentioned how he would bring Alexander back from injury. He tore his ACL last season.

The Money Game is on Prime Video: An exclusive, all-access pass inside LSU Athletics, this compelling docuseries examines the impact of NIL rights on college athletics, as seen through the eyes of some of the top athletes at LSU.

“I think he’s made really good progress,” Kelly said during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference. “I think what you’ll see is his workload, when it relates to plays, will increase dramatically over the next four weeks. It will start this week on special teams and then will continue to then pick up at the corner position.

“So, I think the plan has always been about gradually bringing him in and the reps will start with increased reps at special teams. Visibly, you’ll see that on Saturday against Nicholls with special teams play. And then a little bit more corner bit and that will gradually pick up over the next month.”

Alexander on the field was Oct. 21 of last season when LSU was facing the Army Black Knights. Despite playing in just eight games, Alexander wound up being the team’s seventh-leading tackler with 44. He was one of the better ones in pass coverage too, having two interceptions and a team-high seven PBUs.
