What College GameDay had to say about South Carolina-Oklahoma

What College GameDay had to say about South Carolina-Oklahoma

Every Saturday, College GameDay breaks down the top college football matchups in the country. Ahead of the South Carolina-Oklahoma contest, the GameDay crew was in Austin, Texas for the top-5 Texas-Georgia showdown. As usual, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee, Rece Davis, and Nick Saban were on the panel. Lee Corso also returned after a multi-week absence.

(For those who care, a Texas student missed the promotional scholarship field goal. When College GameDay was in Columbia for the game against LSU, a South Carolina football fan had the most embarrassing attempt of the year, one that somehow went backward.)

Last week, the College GameDay crew didn’t even debate the South Carolina-Alabama game, but the Gamecocks nearly pulled the upset. This week, Shane Beamer’s team was part of the conversation.

With a big race happening in Austin this weekend, GameDay did a segment in which they asked Formula 1 drivers about college mascots. Mercedes driver George Russell took one look at Cocky and asked, “What is that?!” Haas Racing duo Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen declared that Cocky must be the mascot for the “Carolina Male Chickens.” Then, McLaren driver Oscar Piastri didn’t believe that “Gamecocks” was a real team nickname.

Because GameDay was broadcasting from the home of the Texas Longhorns, the crowd decidedly was pro-USC in the lead-up to the Gamecocks’ first-ever matchup with their hated rivals, the Oklahoma Sooners. One person in attendance even brought a giant Gamecock sign that got plenty of TV time.

When it came time for the College GameDay crew to make their picks, the panel did not come to a consensus. Howard and Saban picked the Gamecocks. McAfee riled up the crowd with a fake lean to Oklahoma but picked the ‘Cocks, too. Celebrity guest picker Scottie Scheffler, a class of 2018 Texas alum, ignited the crowd by picking the South Carolina Gamecocks. Kirk Herbstreit was the only panelist to select Sooners, though, he said he wanted to pick USC.

South Carolina and Oklahoma will kick off at 12:45 p.m. Fans can watch the contest on the SEC Network or ESPN app.
