Miami and Virginia Tech have an extensive history, with Miami boasting a 25-15 all-time record in the series. Recent years haven’t differed from the norm, with the Hurricanes on a three-game win streak against the Hokies. Evidently, oddsmakers expect Miami to add to its win streak on Saturday.

After winning back-to-back games, Virginia Tech fell flat in its 26-23 loss to Rutgers on Saturday. In the loss, Virginia Tech QB Kyron Drones only completed 13-of-his-27 pass attempts for 137 yards. He failed to record a touchdown but did throw an interception.

Drones wasn’t the only one who couldn’t take care of the ball. Virginia Tech also committed two fumbles against the Scarlet Knights. On defense, Virginia Tech couldn’t find stops, allowing Rutgers to amass 422 total yards of offense.

Despite his team’s underwhelming performance, Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry hasn’t lost faith in his squad.

“We know the team we have,” Pry said. “We know the potential we have. But, you know, you can’t just be about potential, you got to meet it, and we’re not doing that right now. We are a better team than what we showed today.”

Miami has looked like an excellent team almost every week this season. Its 50-15 win against USF was no exception. On Saturday, the Hurricanes recovered from a slow start to rattle off 28 unanswered points in the second half.

Again, quarterback Cam Ward looked like a Heisman Trophy frontrunner, completing 24-of-34 passes for 404 yards and three touchdowns while only throwing one interception. In the backfield, Jordan Lyle led the way, notching a team-high 104 rushing yards and a score.

Miami’s defense was far from perfect but it still tallied two interceptions and only allowed USF to convert seven of its 17 third-down attempts. Miami head coach Mario Cristobal couldn’t be prouder of his team.

“We had an opportunity to play against different opponents from different conferences and we were 1-0 every week,” Cristobal said. “We got better and now it is conference play, which is a whole different animal. Nobody is content. We are excited about the progress. We are enthused and driven, but we just want to get back to work.”
