Tyreek Chappell injury update: Mike Elko addresses Texas A&M DB’s future

Tyreek Chappell injury update: Mike Elko addresses Texas A&M DB’s future

The Texas A&M Aggies are going to be without defensive back Tyreek Chappell for the remainder of the season after he suffered a non-contact leg injury in practice ahead of the Florida game.

In the wake of that injury, head coach Mike Elko shared what he knows about Tyreek Chappell’s future in an injury update. In particular, he explained that Chappell is still looking at the future but that he won’t need a medical redshirt to return to Texas A&M.

“Probably still working through it. It’s not even a medical redshirt for him,” Mike Elko said. “This is just Tyreek’s fourth year. So, from his perspective in terms of just eligibility, regardless of what ultimately he decides to do, from an eligibility standpoint, this will just be a redshirt year for him and he’ll have another year of college football to play if he chooses to.”

Tyreek Chappell came to Texas A&M in the 2021 recruiting cycle as a four-star recruit, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. Given that he has not taken a redshirt already and he only played in two games this season, he can take a regular redshirt and doesn’t need to apply for a medical one.

That ability to take a redshirt leaves all options open for Chappell moving forward. He can return to Texas A&M, transfer, or move on and declare for the NFL Draft. For now, however, what choice he does make is still up in the air.

For his career, Tyreek Chappell has played in 35 games. He has 109 career total tackles, including eight tackles for a loss. He also has two career interceptions and 24 career passes defended.

Mike Elko shared an injury update on Conner Weigman

The Texas A&M Aggies were without starting quarterback Conner Weigman for their win against the Florida Gators in The Swamp. Now, Mike Elko shared an injury update on Weigman going into the team’s Week 4 game against Bowling Green.

“Yeah, so, Conner is going to be listed as day-to-day and week-to-week – however you want to word that, you know,” Elko said. “We’ll kind of get him through and see where he’s at with everything.”

Elko previously shared that Weigman suffered an AC sprain in the team’s Week 1 loss to Notre Dame, even though he was able to play through the injury in Week 2. In his place, the Aggies started Marcel Reed, who proved to be an effective duel-threat quarterback in the win over Florida.
