TCU vs. SMU odds: Early point spread released, How to Watch

TCU vs. SMU odds: Early point spread released, How to Watch

The stage is set for the Week 4 matchup between two heated rivals that hail from the state of Texas, the TCU Horned Frogs (2-1) and the SMU Mustangs (2-1). This one is the battle for the Iron Skillet, the coveted rivalry trophy awarded to the winner. Both teams are entering the matchup hungry for a bounce back victory. TCU lost in a heartbreaker on Saturday to UCF, 35-34. And SMU lost in a close one to the BYU Cougars, 18-15.

The early point spread has been released for the game and Vegas seems to think it will be a close one. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the TCU Horned Frogs are currently 1.5-point favorites. The over/under is also set at 58.5 total points. You can view more information about the game, including how to watch, below.

Time: 5:00 PM EST on Saturday, September 21st

Channel: CW, FUBO TV (Streaming)

Location: Gerald J. Ford Stadium (Dallas, Texas)–Home of the SMU Mustangs

This game is one of the longest standing college football rivalries in the state of Texas. The Fort Worth-Dallas rivalry matchup, also known as the Battle for the Iron Skillet, has been played since 1915 and this year’s version will be the 103rd time they have clashed, when TCU travels to Gerald J. Ford Stadium to face SMU. TCU holds a 53-42-7 overall record against SMU since the game started over 100 years ago.

Unfortunately for fans of the rivalry, TCU is indefinitely “pausing” the series with SMU after the 2025 game, so this will be one of the last games of the rivalry fans can enjoy for now. TCU and SMU are located 35 miles apart from each other in the state of Texas.

TCU quarterback Josh Hoover has been very accurate early on this season. The trigger man for the Horned Frogs put on quite the performance against UCF in a heartbreaker. He completed 67.3% of his passes for 402 yards, while tossing in four touchdowns with no interceptions. Hoover also had one carry for 10 yards. Hoover has thrown for over 350 passing yards in two of his team’s first three games and he’s always going to be problematic for defenses with his impressive accuracy through the air.

Horned Frogs’ wideout Jack Bech was spectacular in their game against the UCF Knights, hauling in nine catches for 200 yards and one touchdown. He also had 139 receiving yards and a touchdown in their first game against Stanford. Simply put, he’s been one of the toughest receivers in the Big 12 to defend early in the 2024 campaign. He’ll be a name to star and remember for this matchup.

The SMU Mustangs’ coaching staff has decided to play both quarterbacks this season. And it’s been quite unpredictable to determine exactly which one they’ll go with: Preston Stone or Kevin Jennings. That’s kind of been part of the Mustangs’ problem this year. Stone started out very cold against Nevada, but in the fourth quarter, flashed the kind of ability that made him a dynamic trigger man for the Mustangs last year.

SMU has a number receiving threats they can deploy, but the one they really need to get going is tight end RJ Maryland, who showcased why he’s one of the nation’s best in the Nevada game. Maryland was dominant in the fourth quarter and the Wolfpack could simply find no answer for him as he hauled in the game-winning touchdown catch. He finished with eight catches for 162 yards and a touchdown. The Mustangs need to get him going to unlock their ceiling in the passing attack.

SMU also has a number of other speedy running backs that can catch passes out of the backfield, such as Brashard Smith or Jaylon Knighton. Both are lightning quick with the ball in their hands. Smith had nine carries for 108 yards and two touchdowns against Houston Christian.
