Steve Wiltfong shares a name to watch for Notre Dame 2025 quarterback recruiting

Steve Wiltfong shares a name to watch for Notre Dame 2025 quarterback recruiting

On3 Vice President of Recruiting and Transfer Portal Steve Wiltfong gave an update Thursday on Notre Dame quarterback recruiting following Lucedale (Miss.) George County signal-caller Deuce Knight’s flip to Auburn the day prior.

The conversation about the future of the Fighting Irish quarterback room starts with a player already on the roster according to Wiltfong.

“Notre Dame’s quarterback room is healthy with the guys they’ve landed on the recruiting trail, particularly CJ Carr, the true freshman,” he said during the Thursday Wiltfong Whiparound episode. “There’s a lot of excitement about him moving forward; he’s a guy I see competing for the starting job — if not winning it next year and being a multi-year starter for the Irish.”

But with that said, Notre Dame still fully plans on going after a passer in the 2025 class, and Wiltfong named dropped one of the best in the country to keep an eye on — Kernersville (N.C.) East Forsyth’s Bryce Baker, a longtime North Carolina commit and nation’s No. 123 overall player and No. 10 quarterback per the On3 Industry Ranking.

“They’d still like to add a 2025 quarterback to come in and push CJ Carr and others in the room,” continued Wiltfong. “They put out a feeler to Bryce Baker about a month and a half ago when this Deuce Knight stuff started taking off. I talked with (Baker’s) family this morning; Notre Dame reached out to his high school coach.

“I don’t see much movement there right now; Baker is excited about his future at North Carolina … It’s a place where he can play early in his home state.”

Expect the Irish to cast a wide net and consider many quarterbacks for replacing Knight. Considering they’ve been prepping for this moment for a couple months, the Irish staff is aware of the 2025 quarterback landscape.

“Notre Dame has some other irons in the fire for some other high-profile quarterbacks in the class,” explained Wiltfong. “We’ll see if some offers become public; that’ll depend on the young man’s interest in general. If we see a young man report a Notre Dame offer, I’m taking it as he has interest in Notre Dame, and we’ll see what happens with the program that he’s committed to. Notre Dame is also evaluating senior film, so we’ll see if someone emerges from that regard.

“Notre Dame would’ve loved to have Deuce Knight, but the staff is excited with what they’ve seen from CJ Carr to this point. He has the chance to be the guy next year.”
