Ewers went down after connecting with tight end Gunnar Helm in the second quarter with Texas leading UTSA, 14-0. He then went into the injury tent for an extended amount of time before heading to the locker room. There had been no update from the Texas staff yet. Ewers was in street clothes on the Texas sidelines for the remainder of the night.

“(Ewers’ injury was an) oblique strain” Sarkisian told reporters after the game. “An abdomen strain. Remains to be seen the seriousness of that and the length of that, but that’s what it is. We don’t think it’s anything structural or broken or things like that. It was an odd play.”

The Longhorns went 84 yards on the opening drive on eight plays, with 3:52 coming off the clock in the first quarter. Ewers was 7-of-8, for 77 yards passing and one touchdown on the drive. The Southlake (Texas) Carroll signal-caller finished 14-of-16, 185 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

Before the game, it was announced that RB Jaydon Blue, DL Aaron Bryant, and DB Jelani McDonald were ruled OUT for the Longhorns versus UTSA.

Texas backup quarterback Arch Manning came in to replace Ewers and finished with five total touchdowns (four passing, one rushing).
