Southland Conference takes massive shot at Florida, Mississippi State

Southland Conference takes massive shot at Florida, Mississippi State

The Southland Conference took a massive shot at Florida and Mississippi State Saturday, who were on full display for a national audience on ESPN.

The SEC schools faced off in the “Dan Mullen Bowl,” as some dubbed it. The former coach led both programs in his career.

But in response to Reddit College Football, the Southland Conference was quite clever.

“Florida v. Mississippi State is appointment television, winner will get enough momentum to make next year’s CFP, loser gets relegated to the Southland Conference,” Reddit College Football wrote.

Well, the Southland Conference had the last laugh.

“No thank you.” Simple and to the point. It was polite too. But that just goes to show you the struggles of Florida and Mississippi State through three games this season.

Both teams came into Saturday at 1-2, looking for any ounce of positivity.

Florida led 14-7 shortly after head coach Billy Napier assessed DJ Lagway’s play in the first quarter. The freshman quarterback subbed in Graham Mertz again, as part of different QB rotation for the Gators.

“Well much like we did there, we got him an easy completion on the perimeter,” Napier said in an interview on ESPN after the first quarter. “Look, he’s got to let the game come to him. I think if we watch the replay there we had an opportunity to throw the deep post. But great young player, great experience for him. He’s ready to go. He’s had a great week of preparation.”

Regardless of the result, there will certainly be questions for both programs. But there’s no doubt Florida is in the national spotlight due to Napier’s struggles and where Florida anticipated to be at this point.
