Dawn Staley announced South Carolina’s season theme on social media on Monday, the theme for the season is “Uncommon.”

The announcement was teased with a video on Sunday and then shared around 7:00 Monday night. Staley narrated a video montage of the Gamecocks’ three national championships, the most recent parade, fans, practices, and the players goofing around (naturally).

“Here at South Carolina we don’t stand out just because of our wins,” Staley said in the video announcement. “It’s trusting your process. It’s blending work and joy. It’s walking to every arena and seeing garnet and black and showing the FAMs – I mean, our FAMs, they’re pretty special – that love right back. It’s having faith in the people standing next to you and celebrating their successes as much as your own. It’s believing in the unexpected. It’s uncommon.”

The theme also reflects the phrase “uncommon favor,” which Staley used numerous times last season. Most memorably, Staley used it following the national championship when she was interviewed on television.

The annual theme announcement has evolved from a low-key moment for the team to an eagerly anticipated event that involved marketing and promotional aspects.

South Carolina has had an official theme for each season beginning with the 2012-13 campaign. The official themes have been “Sacrifice” (2012-13), “Be the Change” (2013-14), “one.” (2014-15), “The Show” (2015-16), “100” (2016-17), “We Are” (2017-18), “Own It” (2018-19), “Woman Up” (2019-20), “What Matters” (2020-21), “Net Worth” (2021-22), “DNA – Dreams, Nets, Assets” (2022-23), and “Love” (2023-24).

There have also been some unofficial themes along the way. Themes such as “WAWGWAWN (We All We Got We All We Need)” in 2011-12, “Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing” (2021-22), and, of course, “Revenge Tour” (2023-24).

South Carolina plays its first exhibition game on October 15 at Memphis, followed by a home exhibition against Clayton State on October 28. The Gamecocks open the regular season on November 4 against Michigan in Las Vegas.
