One of the stranger OU wins in a long, long time. Down 21-10 in the fourth quarter, the Sooners found a way for the 27-21 victory.

Brent Venables opening statement:

That was the first experience of Sooner Magic as a head coach. Boy, was that an amazing last four drives for offense and defense. A great example of sticking together. As we talked about going into the game, there are going to be moments where we dominate, where they dominate, and it gets sloppy. Just have to take of the ball, which we did and be physical. We showed physicality, and they did, too. They played their butts off. They really did. Recognize Coach Freeze and their team. Came in and did a nice job, played really well. When it was 21-10, probably a lot of doubt on the outside and maybe justifiably so, I don’t know. Our guys – thankful for our guys and their belief in one another. Their fight and we played our best ball when it mattered the most.

Our last four drives, field goal, turnover on downs, touchdown, field goal. For Auburn, our defense: field goal, interception, downs and then I guess that’s downs again to end the game. Really got hot that there when it mattered most.

A great story of redemption for Zach Schmit. We needed him every step of the way. Him nailing that. We’re up by three and now up by six and Auburn has no timeouts. A field goal and everything changes in their play selection. Who knows? They still have to move the ball and have to give it up. I don’t know if our guys would have allowed that to happen. But it didn’t matter. Zach was ready. I was really thankful for his courage that he has shown. He could have easily just quit, wasn’t on scholarship. He’s going to be incredibly successful in the business world. Just named a semifinalist for the Campbell Award. Really, a cool moment to celebrate him and a great example for all of us.

Mike Hawkins being the first true freshman to win on his first start on the road. Just kind of encapsulate everything into that one play on the two-point play. What a heroic-type play. Thankful for the victory, from victory. Thankful for the leaders on this team. We have to get better, there is a lot. I don’t take that away, got to 4-1. Our guys recognize that. Bye week comes at a good time. A lot of guys that are banged up. We kept fighting. We have to get healthy and take on this next stretch. We’ll have another bye week after that. Important that we get physically, mentally reset and get better. We have to utilize our very small window in the right way.

Luke Elzinga was fantastic. Man, he flipped some fields. He was fantastic. Kip Lewis – what a freakin’ play. I’m probably not talking in the same language if had he not pick-sixed them there. I love watching him play. One of his best qualities is he just loves to compete. He plays with so much joy and happiness. Even when you’re chewing him out, he’s a happy guy. A lot of fun, helping those guys celebrate some success. It was due.
