SMU injury report: Mustangs get key player back for Louisville game

The SMU Mustangs will get running back LJ Johnson back for Saturday’s matchup against Louisville. On the flip side of the ball, big nose tackle Tank Booker is available for Rhett Lashlee’s team.

Wide receiver Romello Brinson remains out for the Mustangs, dealing with bursitis, Lashlee said this week.

SMU takes on Louisville on ESPN, a matchup of two teams that are off to strong starts to the 2024 season.

Lashlee is expecting Louisville to present a balanced attack, led by veteran quarterback Tyler Shough. With Shough at the helm, the Mustangs will need players like Booker to try and slow down the high-flying Cardinals.

His team faces a 3-1 Cardinals team coming off a loss to Notre Dame last week. SMU will have to deal with its first big-time ACC environment on Saturday.

“It’s loud, all the momentum and emotions usually swing against you, and you’ve got to see what kind of focus you can have,” Lashlee said this week. “When the play happens, none of that stuff matters. It’s about focusing in and blocking everything out. All football games go back and forth, and on the road, it can swing against you quickly. We need to handle that and not play emotional—just be intense, passionate, and focused. So, we’re excited for that challenge.”
