Recapping a busy day of Steve Sarkisian on the Houston-area recruiting trail

Recapping a busy day of Steve Sarkisian on the Houston-area recruiting trail

Texas’ first bye week afforded Steve Sarkisian and a few assistants the chance to hit the ground running to see numerous recruits, some committed to Texas, some uncommitted, and some committed to other schools.

If you’ve been reading Inside Texas, you know we expect the season on the field to run parallel to how the class finishes. If Texas continues its level of play, the school will almost certainly finish with a Top 3 class.

Earlier in the week, Inside Texas reported Sarkisian would hit Galveston Ball to see five-star commit Jonah Williams. Not only did Sark visit earlier today, he’ll also be there, along with safeties coach Blake Gideon, for Ball’s game tonight.

That wasn’t even close to the head coach’s only stop. Perhaps the news of the day was Sarkisian and cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph stopped by North Shore to visit No. 1 ranked cornerback Devin Sanchez, a long-term Ohio State commit. Here’s more background on that recruitment.

Another flip candidate we hinted at on Monday was Conroe cornerback Dorian Brew. Brew committed to Oregon over Texas, LSU, Ohio State, and USC in July. Similar to the Jonah Williams recruitment, IT has maintained Texas has a better chance than many realize. Sark and Joseph made this visit together and Joseph will stick around for Brew’s game tonight.

Sark also went by Alief Hastings to see high upside Edge Smith Orogbo. Orogbo might need a year or two to gain weight and strength but once he does he should become a sack machine who is surprisingly strong against the run. Think: Joseph Ossai. On3 ranks Orogbo as the No. 3 Edge in the country.

Sark also made it to Hitchcock in Galveston County. Hitchcock is home to A&M wide receiver commit Kelshaun Johnson and high upside defensive lineman Malcolm Simpson who is committed to Nebraska. We await word to see if Simpson was offered today. Texas certainly needs more large defensive linemen.

I believe, but haven’t confirmed, Sark also made it by Spring Dekaney to see stud tight end commit Nick Townsend. In my opinion the 6-foot-3.5, 235 pound Townsend will have a chance to make an impact as a true freshman.

Given the Houston focus for this bye week, it’s safe to assume Sark’s early November bye week itinerary will focus on the DFW area.
