Rapid Recap: Kansas State is playing with an edge

Big night for Avery Johnson

Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson had his best game passing the ball at West Virginia. The sophomore quarterback completed 66 percent of his passes, threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns.

K-State head coach Chris Klieman praised his quarterback’s calmness Saturday evening when passing the football. The Wildcats had a good game plan and attacked the Mountaineers where they were the weakest.

Kansas State made an adjustment to play with tempo on the third drive of the game, which resulted in a 60 yard pass to Jadon Jackson for a touchdown. Johnson made critical plays to keep drives alive on third and fourth down in Morgantown.

Another storyline is the sophomore quarterback did not run the ball at all on Saturday evening. While he said it was more so what they were seeing from West Virginia, Klieman noted it was by design and how they wanted to attack the Mountaineers.

Simply put, nobody from the Wildcats was saying it was due to him being hobbled.

Kansas State playing with an edge

K-State is starting to find itself. Identity? They may have found it.

Since the loss to BYU, the Wildcats have won three games in a row. Klieman praised his team for being able to go on the road at night in two different time zones and come out on top. He also pointed out his team is playing with an edge and an attitude.

The Kansas State leadership and veterans are really coming together and holding each other accountable. The older players are keeping the younger guys in check and mentoring them on what it takes to win.

And now the younger players are making big plays. Jack Fabris had his first career interception in Morgantown and Chiddi Obiazor and Jordan Allen each recorded their first sack of their careers.

Tight ends continuing to improve

Tight ends at K-State continue to make plays. Garrett Oakley and Will Anciaux both found the end zone Saturday night for their second of the season. In total, Kansas State has eight receiving touchdowns from the tight in position, which is tied for first in the country with Utah.

The Wildcats are also close to getting Brayden Loftin back from injury, which will be big for the position group as well. The K-State tight ends are a factor in the passing game and the rushing game. Will Swanson is the leader of the tight end room and is helping all of the young players come along.
