Bryce Young’s NFL career has hardly gone to plan since the Carolina Panthers (0-2) selected him No. 1 overall in last year’s draft.

Just 18 starts into his tenure with Carolina, the Panthers decided to go in a new direction this week. Veteran signal-caller Andy Dalton will get the start in Week 3 against the Las Vegas Raiders (1-1) Sunday, while Young heads to the bench. While Young would be the first to admit he needs to play better, Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss believes the Panthers have ultimately failed him.

“You talk about the development — I remember hearing Tom Brady talk last week or a couple weeks ago talk about the development of these new generational quarterbacks [and] I think the Carolina Panthers failed this young man,” Moss said on “Sunday NFL Countdown” on ESPN. “He’s had three coaches in 18 games, so where is the development coming at as the franchise player, the first overall pick.

“One thing that I will say is I just remember being in this league where the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders were the laughingstock of the NFL. And then it came with the Cleveland Browns. Right now, the laughingstock of the NFL is the Carolina Panthers and it’s not because of how they’re playing, it’s everything from ownership all the way down.”

Young, 23, is already on head coach No. 3 in Carolina. Dave Canales is now in charge and despite his reputation for being a “quarterback fixer,” you could argue that Young took a step back in the first two games of the 2024 season. In the Panthers’ two losses to open the season, Young completed 31-of-56 passes for 245 yards with zero touchdowns and three interceptions. 

Dating back to Week 17 last season, the Panthers have thrown for zero touchdowns and less than 150 yards in four consecutive games. The 2009 Raiders were the last team to do that, per David Newton of ESPN. Dalton, meanwhile, started one game for Carolina last season, throwing for 361 yards and two touchdowns.

While on the surface is may appear the Panthers are moving on from Young, Canales said earlier this week that’s not the case. Young is not available for trade, and the Panthers still view him as a potential franchise quarterback.

“That’s not something we’re really considering,” Canales said Wednesday. “We have a great situation with our quarterbacks right now with guys that have experience. We love where we’re at and we’re all hands on deck focused on playing the Raiders this week.”
