Quinn Ewers injury update: Status revealed for Texas QB

Quinn Ewers injury update: Status revealed for Texas QB

Quinn Ewers had to leave Saturday’s game against UTSA due to an injury, bringing backup quarterback Arch Manning into the game. At the time, the exact issue with Ewers was not known. The ESPN broadcast showed him not wanting to use his right hand to high-five teammates after a touchdown drive.

Now, some more information has been released on Ewers. Play-by-play commentator Mark Jones said Ewers was dealing with apparent hand and foot injuries before sideline reporter Quint Kessenich gave a timeline of the quarterback’s trip to the medical tent.

“Ewers spent around 15 minutes in the medical tent here,” Kessenich said. “It’s rare you see a player with that much time, an extended stay. Doctors came out, walked over to Coach Sark and had a long conversation. I cannot read lips, I’m not sure what they said. Ewers remained in the tent until just now, walking off under his own power with a towel over his head.

“Now, the fans here, you think Heisman favorite, hush. But not quite because Arch has played so well off the bench.”

Not too long after the ESPN report, Ewers was back on the Texas sideline but not in uniform. Street clothes were the attire, signaling for his night to be over. Teammates and UT staff members were seen checking in on the quarterback.

Ewers finished with 14 completions on 16 throws for 185 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. This is just a week removed from putting on a great performance against Michigan. A ton of Heisman Trophy attention was brought to the Texas quarterback but now, there is an injury to deal with.

From a short-term perspective, Texas appears to be in good hands with Manning under center. His first play from scrimmage resulted in a touchdown pass to DeAndre Moore. On the next drive, Manning showed off his athleticism with a 67-yard touchdown run.

Depending on the severity of the injury, long-term effects are where Texas could be worried with Ewers. Next week is the final nonconference matchup against Louisiana-Monroe before beginning SEC play against Mississippi State on Sept. 28. A bye then falls on the schedule before they head to Dallas for the Red River Shootout against Oklahoma.

For now, there is not a ton of information out there about Ewers. Sarkisian should be able to provide more when speaking directly to the ESPN broadcast or during his postgame press conference.
