QUICK RECAP: No. 14 Texas A&M 34, Mississippi State 24

QUICK RECAP: No. 14 Texas A&M 34, Mississippi State 24

No. 14 Texas A&M’s defense came up with big stop and converted when needed as the Aggies held off Mississippi State 34-24 on Saturday

In his second game back from injury, Aggie QB Conner Weigman was 15 of 25 for 217 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Leveon Moss had 14 carries for 56 yards and two scores while Jabre Barber had six catches for 92 yards.

A&M (6-1, 4-0 SEC) finished with 367 yards to the Bulldogs’ 353. The Aggies were 9 of 14 on 3rd down conversions including hitting on nine of the first 11 conversions.

The Bulldogs (1-6, 0-4 SEC) have lost six-straight games, but just finished off a stretch of three-straight games against top 15 opponents. MSU covered the spread in all three games against No. 1 Texas, No. 5 Georgia and No. 14 Texas A&M.

SEC Freshman of the Week Michael Van Buren delivered another solid start for the Bulldogs as he finished 22-41 for 242 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. It was the second-straight week that the freshman signal caller had over 200 yards and three scores.

The Aggie defensive front was incredibly disruptive as they harassed Van Buren and had 9.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. Scooby Williams had 2.0 of those TFL while LB Taurean York had 11 tackles.

Van Buren and the Bulldogs scored a touchdown on the first drive of the game as they drove 92 yards and cashed in on a 4th down and 3 touchdown pass to Davon Booth. It was the first time that MSU had scored on the opening drive since the opening game of the season.

The Aggies battled back and scored on three of the next four drive leading 21-17 at the half. A&M would score all 10 points in the third quarter and held off the Bulldogs in the final quarter.

BIG PICTURE:

Texas A&M: The Aggies are holding their place among the top of the league as they moved to 4-0 in league play this season. A&M has won six-straight games since the season-opening loss to Notre Dame.

Mississippi State: While the record might not show it, the Bulldogs are a team that is improving. Jeff Lebby’s team put up a fight in each of its last three games and have some manageable ball games coming up in the next few weeks to close the season.
