Seventeen aces Power Purdue to 5-Set Victory

Behind a career-high 19 kills by Raven Colvin and the second-most aces by Purdue in program history (17), No. 10 Purdue took down No. 16 Minnesota, 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-10). The win marked Purdue’s first in Big Ten play (10-3, 1-1 Big Ten) while handing Minnesota (8-4, 1-1 Big Ten) its first conference loss of the year in the Boilermakers first five-setter this season.

Five of Purdue’s 17 aces came in the fifth set, including three consecutive aces by libero Julia Kane, setting a career-high to elevate Purdue to a 13-7 advantage.

Colvin posted seven of the team’s 17 aces, tying a program record for most aces in a five-setter. Not only did the senior set a career-high in aces, but also kills, finishing the night with a team-leading 19 on a .387 clip. She rounded the night out with five blocks (1-4). 

Overall, Colvin posted 29.0 points.

Eva Hudson recorded a double-double with 18 kills, 11 digs and two block assists. Fellow outside hitter Chloe Chicoine also reached a double-double with 14 kills, 11 digs.

Setter Taylor Anderson had herself a night, totaling 54 assists, 12 digs, four block assists and three kills. The sophomore led Purdue to a .252 hitting % and helped to hold a Minnesota that has two top-10 wins under its belt to .240. Moreover, Purdue’s final two sets were its best attack, posting a .303% in Set 4 and .429% in Set 5.

Meanwhile, libero Ali Hornung had a career-setting night. After setting a career-high 21 digs last season in Maturi Pavilion, she bested the mark on her final go-around in Minneapolis, totaling 24 digs.

Freshman Ryan McAleer obliterated her previous-best of one ace, generating six service aces on the night alongside 10 digs.

Right side Kenna Wollard went errorless on the night, totaling seven kills on 15 attacks for a .467%, with four of her kills coming in Set 4.

The showdown was the only one of the regular season between the two teams.

Next week, Purdue will play away and at home, beginning with a Friday night battle at Northwestern. The match will be streamed on B1G+ at 8 p.m. ET. Then, Purdue returns to Holloway Gymnasium for a 7:30 p.m. match vs. Michigan State on Big Ten Network.

Soccer Splits on West Coast

In Soccer’s first road trip to the Pacific Northwest since 2008, the Boilermakers fell in a 2-0 decision to the Washington Huskies on Thursday night.

Goalkeeper Emily Edwards recorded a career-high eight saves, smashing her previous best of six that she had set in the game at Butler earlier this season. The sophomore from Holly Springs, N.C., kept Purdue (5-5-1) within striking distance as the team persevered through brisk conditions and 13 mph winds. Her effort marked five consecutive games with at least five saves.

Gracie Dunaway and Chiara Singarella paced the Boilermakers with two shots apiece. Dunaway’s first chance came in the fourth minute, which led to the game’s first corner kick. The Husky defense held strong, though, and remained stout against the Purdue attack for much of the contest.

Chiara Singarella bended in a corner kick thanks to traffic in front of the net from Emilia Deppe and company, and the early 10th-minute goal was the difference in Purdue’s 1-0 victory at Oregon on Sunday.

The Boilermakers (6-5-1, 2-3-0 Big Ten) posted their fifth shutout of the season while becoming the first team to keep Oregon (5-7, 1-4 Big Ten) off the board at home this year. The Ducks entered the day having scored in 10 of their 11 games overall.

Purdue created a pair of corner kicks in the ninth minute and the second of the two led to Singarella’s team-leading fourth goal of the season. She served the ball in from the right flag, playing it to the near post. Abigail Roy and Zoe Cuneio joined Deppe along the goal line, creating a three-player picket fence screen in front of OU goalkeeper Maddy Goldberg.

Emily Edwards made three saves and organized a Purdue defense that surrendered just four shots and one corner kick in the second half. Edwards has been in goal for all five of the Boilermakers’ shutouts this season, three coming on the road.

The Boilermakers are back in action Sunday, Oct. 6 when they host Illinois at 1 p.m. ET.

Boilermakers Struggle on Dav One of Windon Memorial Classic

The men’s golf team struggled early in round one and couldn’t rally in the second round of the Windon Memorial Classic at Conway Farms Golf Club.

Round two was postponed due to darkness with the teams having about four holes remaining in round two. The teams will conclude round two on Monday morning, then roll right into the third and final round.

The Boilermakers totaled a first-round score of 15-over par 299 to finish 18 holes in 13^th place. Arizona led the field with a score of 5-under par 279. Purdue was nine shots behind sixth-place Marquette.

Nels Surtani led the Boilermakers with a 1-over par 72, good for 21^st place. Sam Easterbrook shot a 3-over par 74 for a 37^th-place showing after 18 holes.

Freshman Supapon Amornchaichan shot a 5-over par 76, good for 55^th place. Kentaro Nanayama shot a 6-over par 77 for 62^nd place and Jenson Forrester shot a 7-over par 78 for 69^th place.

Larranaga Takes Runner Up at Milwaukee Tennis Invite

Women’s tennis senior Juana Larranaga saw her championship bid in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic singles flight come up just short in a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Tennessee’s Vanesa Suarez. 

Larranaga battled through two three-set contests in the rounds of 32 and 16, before cruising to straight set victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals. 

Ece Gencer advanced from the quarterfinals when her opponent Ludmila Kareisova from Ole Miss withdrew from the competition, but her run was halted in a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Vanesa Suarez from Tennessee in the semifinals.

The Boilermakers will be back in action next weekend for the Hoosier Classic.
