Paul Finebaum: Georgia remains SEC frontrunner despite losing No. 1 spot in AP Poll Top 25
The Georgia Bulldogs avoided an upset bid on Saturday night against the Kentucky Wildcats, winning by a single point. With that effort, the Bulldogs lost the No. 1 spot in the AP Poll, getting surpassed by the Texas Longhorns.
Despite losing that top spot in the Top 25, during an appearance on Get Up, Paul Finebaum shared that he still believes Georgia is the frontrunner to win the SEC.
“I do believe it, yes,” Paul Finebaum said. “I know it’s hard to say because they have been very inefficient. Their third down ratio has been terrible this year. Their defensive line has been banged up. They still only gave up 12 points yesterday. But give them time. They have a bye week. They’ll get healthy. Then they have Alabama in Tuscaloosa.”
The top of the AP Poll is full of SEC teams. In fact, six of the top seven schools in the rankings are all from the SEC. That includes Texas, the new top-ranked team in the country. Granted, the majority of those teams have yet to start conference play and begin to separate from one another, but for the time being there’s plenty of competition.

For its part, Georgia still has one of the most talented teams in the country and the Bulldogs will have plenty of chances to prove that this season. Finebaum highlighted the upcoming game against Alabama. It goes beyond that, though, with games against Texas, Ole Miss, and Tennessee as well. Those are all teams ranked in the Top 10 of the AP Poll and those games will likely have a major impact on the SEC Championship race in a conference without divisions.
Paul Finebaum says Georgia will be ‘fine,’ benefits from bye week before Alabama game
Georgia is now on a bye week to regroup from the close call against Kentucky. That’s something that Paul Finebaum expects to help Georgia regroup before taking on Alabama.
“I think history would indicate they are fine. Happened two years ago against Mizzou, last year against Auburn. This year they were even helped by a couple of boneheaded decisions by Mark Stoops late in the game, by punting instead of going for it down 1,” Finebaum said.
“Georgia’s biggest problem right now is health. Their defensive line is in rough shape because of injury. They will need a break, and that’s exactly what they’ll get before Alabama in two weeks.”
