Pat Shurmur reveals which position scouts see Travis Hunter playing in NFL

The Colorado Buffaloes are in the midst of bye week as the Week 6 weekend of college football approaches. And there’s no player in the country who’s in need of some extra rest more than two-way superstar Travis Hunter. Who has led the country in total snaps played and made an unprecedented impact on both sides of the ball for the Buffs.

Hunter is undoubtedly one of the top prospects for the upcoming NFL Draft. But many are curious about what position he’ll play at the next level after standing out as a defensive back and wide receiver throughout his college career. Leading to Colorado offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur recently being asked what position NFL scouts have been inquiring about Hunter playing on Sundays.

“Both,” Shurmur said. “I think any team is going to be very, very lucky to have Travis, and then they just got to decide where they want to play him. He’s displaying every week why he could be an impact player on both sides of the ball.

Hunter has generated plenty of Heisman Trophy buzz in the first half of the season with many regarding him as the best overall player in the country. Which he put on display in Colorado’s last game against UCF, a 48-21 win where in 128 snaps he recorded 9 catches for 89 yards and a touchdown along with two tackles, one pass breakup, and an interception followed by him striking the Heisman pose.

“So those are the decisions that the teams as they prepare for the draft or the team that eventually chooses him, that’s their decision what they’re going to do,” Shurmur explained. “But he’s showing everybody that he can play on offense or defense.”

Hunter is one of the best shutdown cornerbacks in the country, not getting targeted much but still managing to record two interceptions, three pass breakups, 15 tackles, and a game-winning forced fumble in overtime against Baylor. All while being Colorado’s leading wide receiver with 46 receptions for 561 yards and six touchdowns through five games this season. Which all rank top five in the country amongst pass catchers.

All in all, Travis Hunter is an outstanding player and one of the most fascinating NFL prospects in recent history. And while he’s seemingly must-see TV right now in college football, his evaluation process heading into the league may be even more fascinating to monitor this offseason.
