Panthers sign cornerback, former first-round pick Caleb Farley to practice squad
The Carolina Panthers have signed cornerback Caleb Farley to their practice squad, NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday. Farley was a first-round pick out of Virginia Tech to the Tennessee Titans in the 2021 NFL Draft.
He played only three games in his rookie season before suffering a torn ACL. He bounced back to appear in nine contests in 2022 and record 10 tackles. Unfortunately, he spent all of 2023 on the reserve/physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
The Titans released him in August just before the start of the regular season. Carolina is the first team he has signed with since.
Although he is only a practice squad member at the moment, perhaps this can be a chance to Farley to revive what once looked like a promising career. Injuries have gotten in his way in the pros, but he showed the talent he had in college with the Hokies.
Farley was named first team All-ACC as a senior at Virginia Tech in 2019. He recorded a league-high 16 passes defended to go along with four interceptions as the Hokies finished 8-5.
Carolina could use some help on defense after starters Shaq Thompson and Josey Jewell went down with injury this past week. The Panthers are off to a 1-3 start and next face the Chicago Bears at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
