OU linebacker Kip Lewis earns SEC defensive honor
Make a pick-six (or Kip-Six) that OU fans will remember forever and get an honor. Sounds about right for OU linebacker Kip Lewis.
Lewis was named the SEC’s Defensive Player of the Week for helping snatch victory from the jaws of defeat for OU on Saturday at Auburn.
With just over four minutes left and OU trailing 21-16, Lewis earned his first-career interception and took it 63 yards for a touchdown.
It highlighted an incredible final 14 minutes for the Sooners, outscoring Auburn 17-0 in that span to win 27-21.
“Kip Lewis – what a freakin’ play,” head coach Brent Venables said after the game. “I’m probably not talking in the same language if had he not pick-sixed them there. I love watching him play. One of his best qualities is he just loves to compete. He plays with so much joy and happiness. Even when you’re chewing him out, he’s a happy guy. A lot of fun, helping those guys celebrate some success.”
The Carthage, Texas, product finished the game with five tackles (four solo) and a tackle for loss. Lewis ranks fourth on the team with his 21 total tackles and has 1.5 TFLs this season. Twelve of his 21 tackles have come in the last two games against Tennessee and Auburn.
No. 19/17 Oklahoma (4-1, 1-1 SEC) is off this week before facing No. 2/1 Texas (5-0, 1-0 SEC) in the Allstate Red River Rivalry on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. on ABC or ESPN.
“Amazing play by Kip,” safety Billy Bowman said. “Shoutout to Kip because that’s really a motor of our defense. He’s on it every single day. But great call by our DC, coach Alley. He showed everybody up at the line like we were sending the house, and he dropped back into coverage, dropped out, picked it off and hey, he found the end zone.”
