My Takeaways

I’ll start with the non conference games, which I’m slightly disappointed with. The tournament we are in is great, facing some high level opponents and a rematch of last year’s wild 2OT loss against Creighton. All three of these opponents were in March Madness last season and these should be very good contests. Outside of that and maybe Stanford, Oregon’s non conference schedule is certainly lacking a high quality opponent.

Of their non conference opponents (excluding the tournament), the highest KenPom ranking any opponent had was 105th in Stanford. That game would only qualify as a Quad 3 win, which is the second lowest quad victory. Oregon last season was 4-7 in Quad 1 games, 6-4 in Quad 2 games, 8-1 in Quad 3 games, and 6-0 in Quad 4 games. Looking at the rest of their opponents, UC Riverside finished at 217th, with an ugly 16-18 record. Troy finished in the KenPom rankings at 132nd last season with a 20-12 record overall. Oregon State finished at 155, Weber State at 156, Montana 163, and Stephen F. Austin at 170. Portland had the worst KenPom ranking out of any of the opponents at an abysmal 299th, keep in mind only 362 schools are ranked.

Oregon should finish this slate with no more than three losses and I feel like if they do without major improvement after, that the expectations should be lightened a bit. Typically one opponent the Ducks play will keep it rather close and then Oregon rolls in the second half. I am very optimistic and excited to watch this team play, and will be sure to keep everyone in the loop this season.
