Officials miss controversial pass interference call against Kansas City Chiefs vs. Atlanta Falcons

Officials miss controversial pass interference call against Kansas City Chiefs vs. Atlanta Falcons

The Kansas City Chiefs may have gotten away with one in a big moment during Sunday Night Football in Atlanta.

On a third down with under five minutes to go, Kirk Cousins threw it down the middle to Kyle Pitts to try and score a go-ahead touchdown against the Chiefs. The coverage by Bryan Cook was incredibly tight, though, as he dropped it in the end zone. There was no flag on the play by the officials for interference.

“That was a lot of contact, wasn’t it?” thought Cris Collinsworth on the broadcast with an agreement from Mike Tirico. “Heads not around and didn’t have a chance to make a play.”

Drake London would then drop the fourth down throw from Cousins for the Falcons to turn it over at the six-yard line with just over four minutes to go.

Atlanta’s defense was able to get the ball back for their offense after forcing a three-and-out by the Chiefs. Still, they’d turn it over on downs again six plays later after needing just one at the 13-yard line. All it took from there was three kneels from Patrick Mahomes to secure the five-point victory inside Mercedes-Benz.

That catch would have further made it the best outing of the season so far from Pitts. He caught a season-low in passes with just a pair but they went for a season-best in yardage at 59. Most of that came on a 50-yard reception that was nearly a score where he went down right at the goal line.

These sequences also ended what was a back-and-forth game between Kansas City and Atlanta in primetime on Sunday. The Falcons held the lead for most of the opening half with it being at a touchdown margin twice. Even so, the Chiefs hit two field goals heading into half to cut it to one before half. They then scored ten more unanswered get an eight-point lead of their own going into the fourth. The ensuing drives made it a close one but KC was still able to hold them off in the end to take it at 22-17.

Kansas City is now 3-0 to start this season while this loss on a short week dropped Atlanta to 1-2.

Should the referees have tossed a flag there? Some fans across the league, especially those in The ATL, would think so. Those back at Arrowhead, though, would likely disagree now that the Chiefs have won nine consecutive games going back to last season.
