Notre Dame football injury report: Jason Onye to miss second-straight game

Notre Dame football injury report: Jason Onye to miss second-straight game

Senior Notre Dame defensive tackle Jason Onye remains out for personal reasons, the Irish announced Saturday afternoon, and will miss Week 8 vs. Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

Graduate student kicker Mitch Jeter, listed as questionable with a hip injury, is available. However, Blue & Gold‘s Tyler Horka reported that Jeter has not been warming up with Notre Dame’s specialists, and junior Zac Yoakam is preparing to start.

Junior guard Billy Schrauth (ankle), also listed as questionable, was not on the availability update. However, as a team spokesperson said last week, Schrauth was not listed on the two-deep depth chart, so that does not mean he will play.

Onye has 7 tackles, including 4 solo stops, so far this season. He also has 1.5 sacks. Onye played a key depth role on Notre Dame’s defensive line behind graduate student starters Howard Cross III and Rylie Mills — though the return of senior Gabriel Rubio (foot) softens the blow of his absence.

Jeter injured his hip early in Notre Dame’s 49-7 win over Stanford on Oct. 12. If he cannot go, Yoakam would likely handle field goals and extra points. Graduate student and 30-year-old army veteran Eric Goins would likely handle kickoffs.

Jeter is 5-of-7 on field-goal attempts, although both his misses were blocked. Yoakam has not attempted a field goal, but he is 7-of-7 on extra points so far.

Schrauth has not played since suffering an ankle sprain in Week 2. Senior Rocco Spindler has started for him at right guard.

Schrauth was Notre Dame’s highest-graded starting offensive lineman before his injury, according to Pro Football Focus. He allowed only 1 quarterback pressure in 75 pass-blocking opportunities, earning an 82.6 pass-blocking grade and a 71.2 offense grade.

The Irish and Yellow Jackets kick off at 3:30 p.m. at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Starting quarterback, top linebacker reportedly out for Georgia Tech vs. Notre Dame

Georgia Tech is dealing with significant injuries of its own. Redshirt junior quarterback Haynes King and redshirt sophomore linebacker Kyle Efford are also both out for Saturday’s game, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

King is 136-of-191 this season (71.2 percent) for 1,568 yards (8.2 yards per attempt), 8 touchdowns and 1 interception. He has only been sacked once, for a loss of 1 yard. Redshirt sophomore Zach Pryon, who has played sparingly — mostly on goal-line run plays — will start in his place.

Defensively, Efford is Georgia Tech’s leading tackler with 52, including 25 solo stops. He also has a sack.
