Nick Singleton injury update: James Franklin pressed for clarity on Penn State RB’s status

Nick Singleton injury update: James Franklin pressed for clarity on Penn State RB’s status

Penn State running back Nick Singleton did not practice for the Nittany Lions on Wednesday. Head coach James Franklin had no update on him, either.

Kaytron Allen was the main running back for the team’s drills during Wednesday’s practice, while fresmen Quinton Martin Jr. and Corey Smith filled in behind him as the only three scholarship running backs available for the team. Franklin kept it short and sweet on the topic of Singleton.

“No, not at this stage,” the Penn State coach said of whether he could update the status of his tailback.

Franklin did open up on his other running backs. Fans are familiar with the abilities of Kaytron Allen, but have yet to be fully introduced to Martin and Smith.

“[Martin and Smith] have done some really good things, and they’ve learned to pick things up so far. I think both of those guys, specifically, Quinton, is preparing, ready to play,” Franklin continued. “But we’ll just see how this thing plays out.”

Martin is a four-star recruit out of the 2024 recruiting class, and was a top-100 prospect coming into the collegiate ranks.

However, with Singleton and Allen leading the charge the Nittany Lions lead the Big Ten through five weeks averaging 251 rushing yards per game. Singleton has carried the ball 53 times for 408 yards and three touchdowns so far this season. His 7.7 yards per carry is good for fourth-best in the conference to this point in the year. Allen also has 53 rushes to his credit, rushing for 289 yards and one touchdown.

“I’m having fun,” Singleton said, speaking to reporters earlier this week. “We’re obviously winning, which is the most important part. I feel like if everybody’s just doing their job, controlling what they can control and it will take care of itself, which it has. So as long as we are winning, I’m having fun.”

Singleton’s availability for Penn State’s matchup against UCLA is up in the air, and Franklin will not speak to media again until after the game.
