New hires, new commitment from Houston Landing

New hires, new commitment from Houston Landing

Houston Landing launched 15 months ago to create a new kind of newsroom, a new kind of journalism, in Texas’ biggest city. You’ve been with us through the startup phase of our journey, and today marks a new beginning. Now we enter a transformative phase as we center the communities of Houston in everything we do, from how we make coverage decisions, to how we engage with the community, to how we create positive change for Houstonians the media has largely ignored.

I’m excited to announce eight new hires in support of a new strategic plan meant to ensure our newsroom stays focused on you, our audience.

Houston Landing remains for and about you. Both the plan and the hires are responsive to what you’ve told us you care about most. We’re expanding our coverage of education with reporters like Brooke Kushwaha, who is a Houstonian, and how public money is spent, with reporter Hanna Holthaus. Read about all of our new hires.

Through rigorous reporting on the opportunities and challenges that impact the majority of Houstonians, we not only provide the context you need to understand our community, but connect you to solutions.

We are not passive observers in the old journalism tradition. While it is not our role to legislate change, we will show the way forward to address chronic issues and will use all our capabilities in pursuit of a better and more equitable Houston. That includes spending more time in the community talking to you – whether at one of our storytelling events or just over coffee with a reporter in Fifth Ward.

Our work will stay free to read and republish. And we remain committed to a community-based funding model, supported with individual gifts, foundation grants, corporate support and by membership, while also seeking new opportunities for revenue.

Thanks for being a part of Houston, and the Houston Landing community. I hope you’ll give us the chance to become one of your trusted news sources here, and we look forward to meeting you in person. Let me know what you think at peter@houstonlanding.org.
