Mike Elko reveals Texas A&M quarterback likely to be ‘game-time decision for the rest of the season’

Mike Elko reveals Texas A&M quarterback likely to be ‘game-time decision for the rest of the season’

Texas A&M will roll into its weekend matchup against Bowling Green keeping the cards close to the vest when it comes to the quarterback decision.

Last week, backup Marcel Reed played against Florida with starter Conner Weigman sidelined by an injury. He played very well.

The performance was good enough to get many Aggies fans to wonder what the plan might be at quarterback going forward once Weigman is fully cleared to return. Coach Mike Elko isn’t ready to reveal that answer, saying the quarterback spot will be a game-time decision for Texas A&M.

“Yeah, I think so. And I think people who get to know me know that it’s probably going to be a game-time decision for the rest of the season,” Elko said on The Aggie Football Hour. “That’s just how we handle things. We have a lot of real honest conversations internally, but those stay internal.”

Weigman has more experience at quarterback at this point, but not to an overwhelming degree. He has struggled to stay healthy the last few seasons, limiting his appearances quite a bit.

But he’s been productive when healthy.

So far this season, Weigman has gone 23-of-44 passing for 225 yards and two touchdowns. He has also thrown two interceptions and struggled in a Texas A&M season-opening loss to Notre Dame.

Reed has been a bit more dynamic.

The talented freshman has gone 16-of-28 passing for 249 yards and two touchdowns. He has not thrown an interception. Reed has also run for 126 yards and a score, showing the ability to slice and dice defenses with his legs.

That’s a skill the Aggies will lean on in the event he continues to play.

So how exactly will Texas A&M split reps at the quarterback position going forward? Will there even be a split, or will the Aggies stick with one option more permanently.

Buy a ticket and find out.

“We’ll do the best we can to get Conner healthy and when we get to Saturday we’ll see who’s playing,” Elko said, not willing to show his hand.
