The final availability report, which was released shortly before kickoff, reveals Michigan State to be down in numbers at both the wide receiver position and in the secondary on top of having to deal with veteran Khalil Majeed out for the season.

One of the bigger blows for the Spartans’ defense is the loss of Chance Rucker. He is expected to miss six-eight weeks as he recovers

“Injury wise Chance Rucker is gonna be longer term,” head coach Jonathan Smith said. “Upper body. But you’re not gonna see him probably for six to eight weeks, which is unfortunate because I did think he was progressing. That’ll be the next man up kind of mentality.”

Rucker went down with the injury in the second half of the win over Maryland. Smith decided not to be more specific than to call it an upper-body injury.

The injuries are starting to stack up for Jonathan Smith. Dillon Tatum, who played safety against FAU and was a corner in 2023, is out for the year after suffering an injury in Week 1. That makes for a pair of blows to the team’s secondary depth.

Kickoff between Michigan State and Prairie View is set for 3:30 p.m. ET live on the Big Ten Network.

Kristian Phillips injury update

The Michigan State Spartans offensive line took a major blow with the injury to offensive lineman Kristian Phillips. Now, he’s going to be out and unable to play for the long term.

As head coach Jonathan Smith explained, it’s a big blow to the offense to lose Phillips. On top of that, he’s likely done for the season. So, the Spartans are going to need to quickly try and find a way to replace him.

“Yeah, it was big… It was coming out of the game there that was kind of late identification of how serious it was,” Jonathan Smith said. “He’s long term.”

Smith chose not to get specific with the exact nature of the injury. However, he did not that it is a “lower body” injury and that he likely won’t play again this season.

On3’s Dan Morrison contributed to this report.
