Michigan QB Alex Orji replaces Davis Warren vs. Arkansas State

Michigan QB Alex Orji replaces Davis Warren vs. Arkansas State

In the third quarter of Saturday’s game against Arkansas State, Michigan made a change. Alex Orji took over at quarterback, replacing Davis Warren after he threw three interceptions.

Orji started warming up after Warren’s third pick of the day, and with just over two minutes left in the quarter, the starter headed to the sideline. That meant Orji came in as the Wolverines held a 21-3 lead.

Warren completed 14 of 17 passes through a little more than two quarters of action against Arkansas State, but all three incompletions were interceptions. He had 122 passing yards at the time of his departure.

After Orji came in, he helped lead a nine-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a passing touchdown to Hogan Hansen to make it a 28-3 Michigan lead as the fourth quarter got underway. Kalel Mullings led the charge with seven carries while Orji took one of his own before finding Hansen in the end zone.

Michigan ended up coming away with the 28-18 victory to improve to 2-1 on the season. After the game, Sherrone Moore was asked about the quarterback situation and pointed out how well Davis Warren played. However, the turnovers were important, and he praised the way Alex Orji handled things the rest of the way.

“Davis was playing good, but you can’t have those turnovers. Orji went in there and did a good job, missed the one throw, but thought he controlled the offense pretty well. We’ll go from there.”

Michigan’s quarterback play was a big topic of discussion following last week’s loss to Texas. More addressed the situation earlier this week and pointed out the offense as a whole struggled.

“Everybody looks at the quarterback and says, ‘he didn’t do this, he didn’t do that,’” Moore said. “We have to be route detailed up as a whole unit to make sure it’s efficient. The fumble [before halftime] is something Colston [Loveland] has never done. He’s been in here beating himself up, but he’s a very good player and he’ll fix that mistake … but you can’t have three turnovers against a very good team.

” … When you go 3 for 12 on third down, you’re not going to have a lot of explosive plays. We’ve got to not turn the ball over, and that will create explosive plays.”

Michigan will now turn its attention to the Big Ten opener next week. The Wolverines will welcome USC to The Big House in Week 4.
