The Miami Hurricanes survived a last-play Hail Mary and official’s review Friday night in their ultimate 38-34 victory over Virginia Tech to land at No. 8 in both the AP Poll and the Coaches Poll.

But Miami dropped from No. 7 to No. 8 in the AP Poll and also from No. 7 to No. 10 in ESPN’s FPI Top 25 after the network updated its computer rankings.

Alabama rose to No. 1 in the AP Poll after its victory over Georgia Saturday night and Texas rose to No. 1 in the Coaches Poll after a convincing victory over Mississippi State. The two teams were the consensus top two picks.

Ohio State, Tennessee and Georgia rounded out the Top 5 in both polls. . Oregon and Penn State each climbed one spot in both polls to No. 6 and 7 after Ole Miss dropped out with a loss to Kentucky. Then there was Mami.

The Hurricanes appeared to be taking a devastating loss Friday until they weren’t. A Hail Mary pass by Virginia Tech into the end zone was initially called a touchdown for the Hokies. After review showed there was no clear possession and that the ball was also touched at least one Miami player that was out of bounds, the call of a touchdown was overturned.

Now Miami travels to California where ESPN’s Gameday Show and the national profile that comes with it will await. The Hurricanes will travel Thursday to allowthemselves to acclimate to the West Coast and won’t return to Miami after the game until Sunday to minimize the wear and tear of the travel.

The ESPN FPI is computer generated and thus a bit different than the traditional rankings. In those rankings, Georga was No. 4 and Tennessee No. 5. Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Penn State and Oregon were ranked No. 5-9 ahead of Miami, which dropped three spots from last week. But ESPN still projects the Hurricanes to win 11 games.
