Mark Stoops was Unintentionally Hilarious at his Monday Press Conference

Following an eventful one-point loss to Georgia, Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops had an eventful Monday afternoon press conference.

You’ve already seen him passionately defend his decision to punt the ball late in the fourth quarter. He also considered eating 50 Grand by publicly complaining about the officiating. It was quite a morning and neither of those moments had me giggling hours late like this one.

Ryan Black, a friend of the program who pens pieces for the Courier-Journal, discovered last week that Bush Hamdan orchestrated one of the best fourth down offenses in college football last fall. Boise State ranked second nationally on fourth down, converting 9 of 11 attempts (81.82%).

I’m paraphrasing, but last Tuesday he asked Hamdan if there’s a secret sauce behind the fourth down success that could translate to Kentucky. The offensive coordinator dismissed that possibility. Fourth down became quite a popular topic after the Georgia game, so Black asked Stoops a similar question. He got a similar response.

“It gets down to the situation. Everything’s different,” Stoops said. “No disrespect at all — I don’t mean this in any way — but we are playing Georgia, not somebody in the Mountain West. There’s a difference there.”

Oh man. Stoops gave Mountain West football a, “Bless your heart.” I’m still cackling. He’s not wrong, but damn Mark!

Injury Updates

This week is a non-conference game, which means Kentucky is not required to submit an official injury report to the SEC office. Nevertheless, Mark Stoops said they will share an injury report before Ohio comes to town.

We have no idea if and when Courtland Ford or Chip Trayanum will be available. Stoops was rather optimistic about Jager Burton’s prognosis. It sounds like there’s a chance the starting left guard may return after missing only one game. He also noted that Kentucky was almost without two starters against Georgia. He applauded Gerald Mincey and Maxwell Hairston, both of which were game-time decisions, for pushing through the pain and performing well.
