Mario Cristobal believes ‘every single explanation’ of final play vs. Virginia Tech leads to incomplete pass

Mario Cristobal believes ‘every single explanation’ of final play vs. Virginia Tech leads to incomplete pass

In the tense final moments of the Miami Hurricanes‘ win over the Virginia Tech Hokies, head coach Mario Cristobal waited for the referees to finish their review of the final play of the game.

Ultimately, Cristobal got the news he was looking for. Upon review, the ruling of a touchdown for Virginia Tech was overturned. It was an incomplete pass and with that, Miami won the game. That quickly became a controversial call but one where Cristobal still believes every single explanation leads to an incomplete pass.

“Instead of getting myself in trouble, I’ll let the refs clear that up for you,” Mario Cristobal said. “I know there’s a hotline, but I’ll pass on the number as soon as I get it. But there was, there was some –you’ve heard the explanations about it. Guy being out, guy touching the ball while he’s out, no one having control. We’ve heard it a couple different ways, but every single explanation leads to it being an incomplete pass.”

It had been a back-and-forth contest with Virginia Tech looking to pull off the upset over Miami. In the end, it came down to a final heave to the endzone where there ended up being a battle for the ball. On the field, referees then ruled the play as a touchdown as time expired to give the Hokies a win. However, upon review, nobody had control when the ball was being handled by players who were physically out of bounds, making it incomplete.

It was always going to be a controversial call from the replay booth, with the team that ended up losing likely crying foul. However, for most fans, the major issue was that it didn’t seem like there was indisputable evidence that the call on the field was incorrect, even though most also agreed that the pass should have been ruled incomplete.

Regardless of that bit of controversy, the call was overturned and with that Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes remained unbeaten this season.

Brent Pry addresses controversial ending, failed Hail Mary

Following the game, Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry addressed the controversial call and his team’s failed Hail Mary attempt.

“The way the game ended, I hope they got that call right,” Pry said. “To take that – to overturn it and take it from our kids, our coaches, our fans, I hope they got that right.”

Whether or not the replay booth got the call right will likely be in the eye of the beholder. However, it’s hard to imagine that Pry is happy to be dealing with the aftermath of that decision.
