Live Updates: No. 6 Tennessee 12, No. 15 Oklahoma 3 (Second Quarter)

The wait is finally over. Game day is here. No. 6 Tennessee and No. 15 Oklahoma do battle Saturday night at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman in a 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time start at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman. The game will be televised by ABC.

The Vols (3-0) are off to a blistering start with a 69-3 win over Chattanooga, a 51-10 win over North Carolina State in Charlotte and a 71-0 win over Kent State. Oklahoma (3-0) is home for a fourth straight game after beating Tulane 34-19 on Saturday, Houston 16-12 last week and Temple 51-3 on August 29.

Tennessee 3, Oklahoma 0 (3:45): Max Gilbert kicked a 27-yard field goal to open the scoring. Nico Iamaleava hit Bru McCoy on a slant on second down and McCoy did the rest, turning it into a 38-yard catch-and-run to set the Vols up with first-and-goal at the Oklahoma 10. DeSean Bishop was stopped for a short gain on first down, Iamaleava threw incomplete on second down and was stopped for a loss of one on third down.

Tennessee 3, Oklahoma 3 (0:33): Oklahoma matched the Tennessee field goal late in the first quarter, with the Vols getting a stop on third-and-short to stall the Sooner drive. Oklahoma went 55 yards in 10 plays before kicking a 37-yard field goal.

Tennessee 10, Oklahoma 3 (0:03): The Vols needed two plays to answer. Iamaleava threw a 66-yard touchdown to Dont’e Thornton, completing the pass on a post route with Thornton running away from the Sooner secondary to give Tennessee the lead on the game’s first touchdown. The two-play drive covered 77 yards in 30 seconds.

Second Quarter

Tennessee 12, Oklahoma 3 (9:12): Tennessee pinned Oklahoma on its own 4-yard line with a punt and the Sooners jumped offsides before first down. That’s all the Vols needed for Jayson Jenkins to make a tackle the end zone for a safety.

The Tennessee-Oklahoma Series

Tennessee and Oklahoma have played just four times dating back to 1939, but played twice in the last 11 years.

The Sooners rallied from down 17-0 at Neyland Stadium in September 2015 to win 31-24 in overtime with quarterback Baker Mayfield leading the comeback.

Tennessee had gone to Oklahoma the season before, losing 34-10 in Norman in the second year under former head coach Butch Jones.

The first two meetings were in the Orange Bowl. Oklahoma won 26-24 on New Year’s Day in 1968 in Miami and Tennessee won 17-0 on January 2, 1939.

The 1939 Orange Bowl win capped a perfect 11-0 season for the Vols, who were named national champions by multiple outlets.

Tennessee gave up just 16 total points over the 11 games and shut out seven of its final eight opponents that season. The Vols didn’t allow a single point during the regular season in 1939, shutting out 15 straight opponents dating back to the 1938 season, before losing to USC 14-0 in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day 1940.
