Kirk Herbstreit reacts to controversial calls, LSU comeback vs. South Carolina

Kirk Herbstreit reacts to controversial calls, LSU comeback vs. South Carolina

LSU escaped Colombia with a win on Saturday, coming back from a 17-point deficit to beat South Carolina. But plenty of fans, especially those in garnet, were left bitter at a lot of calls costing the Gamecocks in key moments.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit, who was on the call in Williams Brice Stadium on Saturday, shared his reaction to the game, including those penalties. And though he didn’t stake out a stance, it probably won’t matter for those who already feel their team got robbed — or escaped with a road win.

“What a game,” Herbstreit said on Twitter. “Game could have gone either direction. Some tough calls late in the game that I’m sure many will be talking about for some time. Congrats ⁦[LSU] and good luck to ⁦[South Carolina] rest of the year.”

And Herbstreit shared a picture along with his post: His now internet-beloved golden retriever, Ben, snuggled under a blanket on the couch back in home in Ohio, since he didn’t make the trip this weekend.

Shane Beamer shared an update on his injured quarterback after the loss

South Carolina had to play down the stretch against LSU without starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers. An apparent ankle injury kept Sellers out of the game, leaving the Gamecocks with Robby Ashford — somebody head coach Shane Beamer has stated his confidence in before.

Unfortunately, South Carolina came up just short after a missed field goal in the dying seconds. Attention immediately turned to Sellers’ health in the postgame press conference. Beamer was able to provide an update, going through his and the medical team’s thought process through the entire situation.

“He’s got a little bit of an ankle sprain, I think he’s gonna be fine,” Beamer said. “I went in the training room at halftime and they were checking his ankle out and thought it was an ankle sprain, and he wanted to try and go. We taped him up and the first possession of the second half where we were backed up, we didn’t feel great about him being in that position backed up, so that’s when we put Robby in.

“Then the next series we say, ‘Let’s just give it a shot. Maybe LaNorris will get out there and the adrenaline will kick in and he’ll feel okay.’ But there was one play there where he was in and we ran a play to the left over there towards LSU’s sideline and we should have pulled it, because the end crashed down and hit Rocket in the backfield.

“When he didn’t pull it — not that he didn’t pull it because he couldn’t run, but we just felt like, ‘You know what? If he’s not going to be able to move like he wants to move, we’ll get him out.’ That was really the conversation. Felt like Robby gave us the better opportunity because LaNorris certainly wasn’t 100% there in the second half.”
