Joseph Charleston injury update: Pete Thamel reveals status vs. Vanderbilt

Joseph Charleston injury update: Pete Thamel reveals status vs. Vanderbilt

Missouri safety Joseph Charleston will be available in the Tigers’ matchup against Vanderbilt on Saturday. Charleston was initially questionable for the game after suffering an injury in Missouri’s Week 3 win over Boston College but will play on Saturday, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Anybody familiar with Charleston’s history won’t be surprised to hear he’ll be available against the Commodores. Charleston has started in 28 straight games over the last three years.

Charleston’s absence would’ve been a major loss for Missouri. The graduate student already boasts eight tackles this season, along with one pass deflection. In the 2023 campaign, Charleston started all 13 games, finishing the regular season with 61 tackles, the second most on the team.

Further, he recorded four pass breakups, three quarterback hurries and forced a fumble. Charleston was a consistent standout for the Tigers, tallying at least five tackles in eight of the team’s 12 regular-season games.

Now, Charleston will have a chance to add to his stat sheet on Saturday. He’ll most likely be more involved in run defense than pass defense against Vanderbilt. The Commodores are only averaging 186.7 passing yards per game, ranking 99th in the country.

Missouri and Vanderbilt release injury reports

Although Charleston will be available to play on Saturday, not everybody is so lucky. On Thursday, both teams released their injury reports for the game.

Missouri

Missouri has won the last four meetings between the two programs, most recently defeating the Commodores 38-21 last season. With two wins already under its belt this season, Vanderbilt will be hungry to turn the tide against the Tigers.

Despite its dominant history against Vanderbilt, Missouri isn’t taking the Commodores lightly. On Tuesday, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz praised Vanderbilt and emphasized his team is not overlooking the Commodores.

“It’s going to be a real challenge for us,” Drinkwitz said. “It’s not about our opponent, it’s about us and our approach and how much better we can improve. How much more disciplined and consistent we can be in all three phases in the ownership that we take to that.”
