Joel Klatt insists Heisman voters should vote for Travis Hunter

Joel Klatt insists Heisman voters should vote for Travis Hunter

With what he has done through three games, Joel Klatt doesn’t see how Travis Hunter won’t be in contention for The Heisman Trophy.

Klatt promoted Hunter’s campaign for the Heisman during an appearance on ‘The Herd’ on Wednesday. He felt that voters should absolutely have him as a finalist who’s right there to win the biggest award in college football.

“Travis Hunter – who’s, by the way, fabulous,” said Klatt. “If you were voting for The Heisman Trophy, you’d probably have to vote him.”

This comes after Klatt began a similar case on his own show on Monday. To him, Hunter’s uniqueness as an athlete for Colorado is something he thinks needs to be recognized in that way.

“Travis Hunter probably belongs in New York. I know it’s only three games but if he continues this at all? Like, at all, a percentage of what he’s doing? He belongs in New York,” said Klatt. “We’re getting to see something we’ve never seen in college football, at least in the modern era. We’ve seen some great players that can play both ways. Maybe they’ll roll out there, maybe return a punt here or there. Not a guy like this. Not a guy that is clearly a guy that could win The Biletnikoff Award and The Thorpe.”

“Again, how is he not in New York? Regardless of the way the season goes for Colorado. I’m just talking about him as a player. If this really is the most outstanding player in college football, how does Travis, if he can continue this at all – how is he not in New York as a finalist for that trophy?” Klatt asked. “He’s one of the best players in the country. To this point, this guy belongs in New York, at least in the first month of the season.”

If that’s not enough, Klatt also agreed with Cowherd when he wondered if Hunter should also be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

“Possibly,” said Klatt. “He probably should.”

Over three games of his junior year with the Buffaloes, Hunter has caught 30 passes for 342 yards and five touchdowns while also posting 11 tackles and an interception on defense. That includes his latest outing where he had 13 catches for 100 yards and two scores plus five tackles, an interception, and a deflection during their win over Colorado State.

Hunter is proving time and again that he’s a singularity with what he’s doing on both sides of the ball. That duality, assuming it continues and continues at this rate, is what could now throw him in the running for The Heisman Trophy.

“He is a great player,” Klatt said.
