Joe Gibbs Racing having flight issues into Bristol, forced to scramble

Joe Gibbs Racing having flight issues into Bristol, forced to scramble

The Xfinity Series garage opened up at Bristol Motor Speedway Friday morning with the four Joe Gibbs Racing cars sitting idle.

According to Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports, the JGR team plane was unable to land at Bristol due to fog. Pockrass added that JGR “should be OK” with practice set for 2 p.m. Some Cup Series team planes are delayed as well, however, that garage doesn’t open until 10:30.

JGR has four cars competing in Friday’s Food City 300, the regular season finale. Both of JGR’s full-time drivers, Chandler Smith and Sheldon Creed, are locked into the 12-driver Xfinity Series playoff field. Joe Graf Jr. is making start No. 4 this season, while Ryan Truex is behind the wheel of the No. 20 Toyota. Truex, who rotates with Aric Almirola in the No. 20, took the checkered flag at Daytona last month and finished P10 at Atlanta on Sept. 7.

Joe Gibbs Racing prepping for Xfinity Series playoffs

Creed, while 145 points clear of the playoff cutline, remains winless not only this season, but in his three-year Xfinity Series career. He’s been the runner-up 12 times since 2022, including five times this season. That includes this past Saturday at Watkins Glen when Connor Zilisch outlasted him to get to Victory Lane.

Will Bristol finally be Creed’s day?

“Yeah, I mean, obviously you want to win before this point, which we’ve been close, but close isn’t winning. So yeah, now we can focus on Bristol,” Creed said after Watkins Glen. “Obviously, we want to be good at Bristol to lead into the playoffs. And then yeah, winning in the playoffs can be really important for us.”
