Jerry Jones reacts to Cowboys blowout loss vs. Saints: ‘We certainly didn’t see this coming’

Jerry Jones reacts to Cowboys blowout loss vs. Saints: ‘We certainly didn’t see this coming’

Dallas Cowboys fans left AT&T Stadium disappointed on Sunday after their team fell 44-19 to the New Orleans Saints. After the game, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones attempted to comfort any heartbroken fans who’d lost faith in the team following their lackluster performance.

“This is early. This is very, very early,” Jones said, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. “We certainly didn’t see this coming. Obviously we’ve got a lot of room for improvement here.”

In the blowout loss, the Cowboys couldn’t stop the Saints’ offense, which amassed 453 total yards. For reference, the Cowboys held the Browns to a mere 230 yards in their 33-17 win in Week 1.

Saints running back Alvin Kamara was particularly dominant, tallying 115 rushing yards and three touchdowns against the Cowboys, while also hauling in two catches for 65 yards and a score.

Of course, the Cowboys’ defense wasn’t solely responsible for the team’s loss. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott threw two interceptions against the Saints compared to just one touchdown. Further, no Cowboy recorded more than 30 individual rushing yards.

After the game, Prescott addressed the Cowboys’ underwhelming performance.

“We’re gonna learn from it. That was a good team,” Prescott said after the game, via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “Gotta give them credit. This is the NFL. … It’s about trusting the process and responding. I know we have the guys to do that. Honestly excited to get back to work and turn this page.”

Dallas linebacker Micah Parsons also showed an impressive amount of accountability following the loss.

“To me, it had nothing to do with the scheme,” Parsons said. “I thought [Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer] called a pretty good game. … At the end of the day, I just believe we got outplayed. Whoever played on that field, everyone didn’t play to 100%. That’s just me being accountable and saying the truth. We all got to play better.”

It’s not the first time the Cowboys have suffered surprising setbacks early in a season. In the 2023 campaign, Dallas fell 42-10 to the San Francisco 49ers. Alas, the team bounced back, winning seven of their next eight contests.

Now, Cowboys fans can only hope this year’s team shows a similar level of resolve. Up next, the Cowboys will square off against the Baltimore Ravens at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sept. 22. The game will air live on FOX.
