Jerod Mayo backs Jacoby Brissett over Drake Maye as Patriots QB ‘until I say’

Jerod Mayo backs Jacoby Brissett over Drake Maye as Patriots QB ‘until I say’

New England Patriots (1-2) head coach Jerod Mayo said Friday that Jacoby Brissett will remain the starting quarterback over Drake Maye “until I say he’s not.”

“Jacoby is our quarterback until I say he’s not the quarterback,” Mayo said. “I thought last night, he showed a lot of toughness, a lot of grit and on protection breakdowns, tried to do what we asked him to do. But I would just say as a team, as a coaching staff, we just gotta be better.”

Brissett, 31, made his third consecutive start to open the season in Thursday’s 24-3 Week 3 defeat to the New York Jets (2-1). Brissett completed 12-of-18 passes for just 98 yards. New England’s offensive line failed to keep Brissett upright throughout the game, as New York sacked him five times. Per Next Gen Stats, the Jets blitzed Brissett on 40% of his dropbacks and pressured him on eight of those 10 dropbacks. Brissett took more sacks (three) than he had completions (two) against the blitz.

“I mean, I’m big man, I can take it. I’m always going to get back up,” Brissett said after the game. “You know, that’s one thing about me. I’m always going to get back up, you know. And find ways to make plays, man, that’s what it comes down to. You know, it’s football. I’m supposed to get hit, you know. I didn’t sign up for this sport to not get hit, so I don’t really pay attention to that.”

Jerod Mayo gives Jacoby Brissett, Drake Maye a look vs. Jets

On the Patriots’ final offensive drive, Maye got his first taste of NFL action. The 2024 No. 3 overall pick took some huge hits and was sacked twice. He completed 4-of-8 passes for 22 yards. Mayo said “I don’t know” after the game when asked about the possibility of making a quarterback change.

Through three games, the Patriots are averaging 13.0 points per game. They were slightly better in 2023, averaging 13.9 points per game. Whether it’s Brissett or Maye under center, it’s clear the Patriots need to be better up front if they want to improve offensively.

“Look, we just got beat pretty handedly and I’d say right now everything is of concern,” Mayo said. “The offensive line, you want those guys to be able to go out there as a unit and gel together but whether it’s through injury or through whatever it is, we just haven’t found the right combination.”
