Jeff Lebby reveals message to fans disappointed in Mississippi State’s start

Jeff Lebby reveals message to fans disappointed in Mississippi State’s start

Mississippi State is now 1-2 to begin this season after a disappointing defeat at Arizona State and what was just a bad loss at home this weekend to Toledo. That leaves Jeff Lebby where he’s keeping those in Starkville bought in as they begin conference play.

Lebby addressed the need to keep fans faithful to them and his debut year during his press conference on Monday. He said their season’s start has let them all down and certainly did after the 24-point loss to the Rockets.

“There’s great disappointment in how we played, how I coached, how we did what we did on Saturday morning,” said Lebby.

“For us, you know, our brand and what we do on Saturdays? Man, it affects our entire state. It affects our fanbase, our university, and the energy that’s pumped into our community,” Lebby said. “We understand that. We do.”

Mississippi State went to Tempe two weeks ago and lost by seven to the Sun Devils. However, they were down as much as 27 points in that one. That was before scoring three unanswered touchdowns to cut it to that final margin of just a possession.

Then came the 41-17 loss to Toledo this weekend. They were down by 25 at halftime and by as much as 32 at the start of the third quarter. The Rockets scored a touchdown on four of their first five possessions in the opening half. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs either went three-and-out or turned it over in five of their six to create that deficit.

Mississippi State was going to have their pains to start with. It comes naturally with Lebby being a first-time head coach and him being their third in as many seasons. Still, with a loss like this one, he knows they have work to do now to correct what’s been wrong.

“We’re going to make sure that our building and the guys inside our room have great awareness of just doing our job, controlling exactly what we can control,” said Lebby.

We want to find a way to get back on track,” Lebby said. “We want to find a way to focus incredibly small and to go out a really good product on the field.”

This will only get more difficult with the league season starting this week, especially with six of their nine opponents currently being ranked with five being in the Top-10. Still, they have a chance to get right as they open in front of the cowbells against another struggling opponent in Florida.
