Jack Tuttle, Jadyn Davis updates – are either options for Michigan football?

Jack Tuttle, Jadyn Davis updates – are either options for Michigan football?

Michigan quarterbacks have yet to get the offense going this year, first Davis Warren, now Alex Orji. Jack Tuttle threw the ball very well this summer, to the point some in the program believed he’d be “the guy.” Setbacks following offseason surgery have hindered his progress, and while he’s no longer on the “questionable list” on Saturdays, he still doesn’t seem ready to play.

We asked Michigan offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell if Tuttle was 100 percent and how many reps he was getting in practice.

“I’m not going to fully disclose on injuries, but Jack is progressing in a very, very good manner, and he’s getting some reps here and there,” Campbell said.

Several days ago, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said Orji was getting 60 to 70 percent of the reps with Warren getting the majority of the others. Jayden Denegal and Jadyn Davis were doing a lot of scout team work, and that will likely continue.

Still, there’s a segment of the fan base that wants to see what Davis can do given his prep accolades. They won’t rush him along, Campbell said, echoing what Moore said earlier this year.

“As far as an option this season, we don’t know how this season is going to play out, but we constantly develop him every single day,” Campbell said. “He gets reps, just like the other guys, and he’s got to continue to develop.

“Nowadays with social media and everything, everyone’s on this instant gratification of a freshman coming in and playing. I think [Minnesota Vikings coach] Kevin O’Connell said it best, right? ‘Organizations fail young quarterbacks … not young quarterbacks failing. You’ve got to make sure he’s developed properly and ready for the situation.”

He’s confident Davis will be ready to be the Michigan quarterback when it’s his time.

“He’s going to have a bright future at the University of Michigan,” Campbell said. “Whether that’s as fast as the outside perceived media or expectation is, that’s not for us to make a rash decision based on that. We’re going to put him in a situation where he’s ready to go play.”
