Grayson vs. Newton game postponed for chemical fire after rescheduling for hurricane

After initially being rescheduled because of Hurricane Helene, the Loganville (Ga.) Grayson versus Covington (Ga.) Newton high school football game has once again been postponed until a later date. According to a statement from Newton High School, the game was canceled due to the ‘lingering effects’ of Sunday’s chemical fire in Rockdale County.

“Tonight’s game is canceled,” Newton’s statement reads. “For safety reasons, tonight’s game with Grayson will be rescheduled out of an abundance of caution due to the lingering effects of yesterday’s chemical fire in Rockdale. Once we have finalized a new date for the game we will notify you accordingly.”

A shelter-in-place order was issued for the county for a population of just over 90,000 people, per The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The shelter-in-place was lifted Monday evening, but concerns about air quality in the area remain.

Tonight’s scheduled game was set to feature No. 7 Grayson and unranked Newton. Grayson came into this week with a 4-1 record — its lone loss coming in week one by one point to Collins Hill. Since then, the Rams have rattled off four straight wins over Thompson (Ala.), Dorman (S.C.), Mallard Creek (N.C.) and Grovetown.

Grayson features several Power 4-caliber prospects, including: elite junior linebacker Tyler Atkinson, Texas offensive tackle commit Nick Brooks, four-star junior linebacker Anthony Davis, Florida defensive line pledge Joseph Mbatchou, Georgia Tech EDGE commit Andre Fuller Jr., Indiana corner commit Jaylen Bell and Boston College DL commit Josiah Victor.

Newton is 2-3 on the year with win over Alcovy and Archer — and losses to Covington Eastside, Douglas County and East St. Louis (Ill.). Multiple Power 4 commits also headline these Rams with Cincinnati running back commit Zion Johnson, UCF DL pledge Ryshawn Perry and Minnesota cornerback commit Zachry Harden.
