While the two programs currently have identical 1-2 marks on the season, the programs could not be in a more different place overall.

Mississippi State is in the first year for new head coach Jeff Lebby, still building. Florida is in its third year under coach Billy Napier, who is on the hottest of seats as his program trends toward a third straight losing season under his direction.

The calls for Napier’s job will be deafening should Florida fall to Mississippi State this weekend. Those are the stakes.

The Gators have been a bit of a rollercoaster so far, especially offensively. The team has changed quarterbacks and rotated quarterbacks, the latter likely the strategy again on Saturday in Starkville.

The Bulldogs, on the other hand, have suffered back-to-back losses. The first was a perfectly explainable one, on the road at Arizona State. The second was a blowout loss to Toledo last weekend. That was harder to waive away.

The winner of this game will move one step closer to stabilizing the 2024 campaign. The loser will have to further pick up the pieces.
