Dez Bryant calls out Mike Zimmer amid early Dallas Cowboys defensive struggles vs. Ravens

Dez Bryant calls out Mike Zimmer amid early Dallas Cowboys defensive struggles vs. Ravens

Dez Bryant has seen enough from his former team. On Sunday, the retired wide receiver weighed in on the Cowboys’ defense after the Ravens jumped out to an early 14-3 lead against Dallas. Specifically, Bryant took aim at Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.

“Zim coaching style and the Cowboys defensive players don’t align,” Bryant wrote on X.

After a user on X attempted to defend Zimmer’s playcalling, Bryant didn’t hesitate to fire back.

“You just talking,” Bryant wrote. “Dan Quinn was just there.. other than the packers game last year.. them boys was balling.. it’s coach Zim Defense.”

In Week 2, the Cowboys gave up 44 points against the New Orleans Saints in a losing effort. The Saints dominated the Cowboys on the ground and through the air, with quarterback Derek Carr amassing 243 passing yards while running back Alvin Kamara totaled 115 rushing yards.

Now, early against the Ravens, the Cowboys’ defense isn’t showing much improvement from last week. In his post, Bryant pointed to the Cowboys’ defensive success under Dan Quinn last season, who left the organization to become the Washington Commanders’ head coach.

Dez Bryant was correct in complimenting Quinn’s defense with the Cowboys. In the 2023 campaign, the Cowboys boasted the fifth-best defense in the league, only allowing 299.7 yards per game. For reference, the Saints posted 432 total yards of offense on the Cowboys last week.

Micah Parsons contradicts Mike Zimmer

After the loss last week, Zimmer attempted to explain the Cowboys’ lackluster performance.

“I wouldn’t say it’s an effort issue,” McCarthy said via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “I think it really was they were quicker to the first punch than we were. They finished better than we did.”

Despite Zimmer’s reasoning, Cowboys standout Micah Parsons had a different perspective. In fact, the former Penn State star contradicted his defensive coordinator.

“The effort was not there, by all 11,” Parsons said. “No matter who played well, who didn’t play well. The effort by all 11 was not there… At the end of the day, you have a standard of who you are in training camp and throughout this process to get you ready for this season.

“We didn’t uphold that standard. That wasn’t the Dallas Cowboys that I saw or I knew that showed up last week.”

No matter who is correct, they both have the same goal: win games. Tune in to FOX to watch the Cowboys attempt to mount a comeback against the Ravens.
