Detroit fans berate officials following Derick Hall one-armed sack

Detroit Lions fans went after officials during the Monday Night Football game when Seattle Seahawks linebacker Derick Hall sacked Jared Goff. Late in the second quarter Hall got past a Lions offensive lineman and sacked Goff by pulling him down by the back of his jersey with one hand. Lions fans wanted a horsecollar penalty but officials didn’t make the call because Hall was allowed to sack him that way since Goff was in the pocket. This led to the crowd chanting “bullshit.”

In 2023, former NFL referee and CBS Sports rules analyst Gene Steratore said: “If the quarterback is in the pocket, there cannot be a penalty for a horse collar tackle. However, once he leaves the pocket, he is offered that protection.”
