Denny Hamlin reacts to Cole Custer confronting Chandler Smith after Xfinity race at Kansas

Denny Hamlin reacts to Cole Custer confronting Chandler Smith after Xfinity race at Kansas

Denny Hamlin shared his thoughts on Cole Custer confronting Chandler Smith after the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoff race at Kansas Speedway on Saturday. On the Actions Detrimental podcast, Hamlin reacted to the confrontation of the two drivers, saying that it was surprising to see Custer go after Smith.

“I saw that [Custer] was upset after race,” Hamlin said. “I understand why but I also understand Chandler’s spot there. I think he was upset because he got close really close off of Turn 4 a few times. I don’t think he was upset with Chandler racing hard, they’re certainly going for the win there. But it sounded like Cole was agitated that he didn’t get cut very much room when he thought he was there.

“…That’s actually pretty uncharacteristic of Cole. Usually, if he’s complaining, about someone driving, he’s usually got a pretty high tolerance historically. I usually give him the benefit of the doubt. They’re racing for the win there. I didn’t watch it on TV, didn’t see anything crazy egregious on anyone’s part, but it was close.”

Custer and Smith were battling for the lead only to lose to Aric Almirola on Saturday. This resulted in Custer earning a P2 while Smith received a P3 finish. A strong day for both drivers, but Custer approached Smith after the race after he made a strong move off Turn 4 for the lead on the final green-flag run that caused Custer’s car to kiss the wall. During the exchange, Custer told Smith that he “drove him like a f***ing clown.”

“I would be just as frustrated,” Smith admitted, per NASCAR.com. “I moved up. I took his air away and took his line away for 10 or so laps there trying to hold him up as long as I can, trying to give me the best shot. Was hoping I could hold him off long enough to the 20 got to him and they started racing. I got some breathing room but I was like a lap or two short from doing that. The 20 just got to him. So, yeah, it sucks. I understand his frustration. Last week, I was frustrated with some things about Bristol and I completely get it. I understand his point of view. I definitely didn’t put him in the fence.”

With the strong finishes from Custer and Smith, they are in a good position to advance to the Round of 8 of the Xfinity Series Playoffs. Custer, Smith and the rest of the Xfinity Series drivers will return to the track this Saturday to compete in the United Rentals 250 at Talladega Superspeedway.
