Deion Sanders breaks down whether Travis Hunter can play both ways in NFL

Deion Sanders breaks down whether Travis Hunter can play both ways in NFL

Colorado star Travis Hunter is likely the best two-way player in the country. If not the best, then certainly the most prolific and most talked about.

But can Hunter pull off playing on both sides at the next level? That was a question put to coach Deion Sanders on Saturday on Big Noon Kickoff.

“He plays both,” Sanders said definitively. “The thing about Travis is if you put him on, if he plays cornerback and he’s being dominant out there and you sit up there and you can’t move the ball at the next level, you’re going to say, ‘Well my best receiver is on the sideline. C’mon.’ So that’s going to be a coaching call.”

It’s been hard to pick a clear cut side of the ball that Travis Hunter is better on, and perhaps the speaks to his talent on both sides of the ball.

Sanders explained his philosophy on it clearly.

“Travis is a football player, and you can’t have a football player on the sidelines,” he said. “That’s one kid that we know exactly what we’re going to get at practice as well as in the game.”

Hunter is coming off arguably his best college game on both sides of the ball. Against Colorado State, Travis Hunter managed to record a season-high 13 catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball he racked up five tackles and picked off a pass, returning it for 38 yards.

That kind of production is what will get NFL scouts drooling.

Sanders pointed out another reason they should be salivating. Travis Hunter could be even better at the next level.

“The pro game is much slower,” Sanders pointed out. “Everybody goes to the huddle. It’s no tempo. You don’t hit anybody in practice. You barely hit in the game, they’re laying receivers down. So the pro game is much more suited for Travis doing what he’s doing now.”
