After the 2021 season, Oklahoma found itself facing a coaching change. Lincoln Riley left after the regular-season finale to become the head coach at USC, and some Sooners players – such as Caleb Williams – joined him via the transfer portal.

But one of the biggest names who stayed behind in Norman was Danny Stutsman. Now an All-American linebacker who has flourished under Brent Venables, he told Paul Finebaum he considered leaving USC after Riley’s departure.

Of course, Stutsman stayed and became the centerpiece of Oklahoma’s defense. Sticking with Riley crossed his mind, though, but the idea of playing in a Venables defense played a crucial role in his decision to stay with the Sooners.

“I think as a young player, being recruited by Lincoln Riley and Coach [Alex] Grinch, I really fell in love with the school,” Stutsman said. “I loved those guys as coaches. Obviously, it got me into this school and everything came to it. When Coach Riley was leaving, I was faced with a really tough decision. Obviously, I loved that coaching staff. I really considered going to USC. I don’t think I’ve told many people that. It was definitely a decision on my hands.

“But once Coach Venables was announced as the head coach, there was no doubt in my mind I was going to stay at Oklahoma at the university I love. That’s been such a great, amazing opportunity for me. Coach Venables has really developed me into a great man and an awesome football player. I’m really grateful to have him and everyone else he’s brought into this culture.”

Danny Stutsman: Brent Venables’ ‘past history’ factored into decision

Brent Venables’ resume spoke for itself when he returned to Norman. He was Bob Stoops’ defensive coordinator from 1999-2011 and was a key assistant under Dabo Swinney at Clemson from 2012-21.

That history was a big reason Danny Stutsman decided he wasn’t going to leave Oklahoma. It’s safe to say, it worked out considering he has 269 tackles – including 29 for loss – six sacks and three interceptions under Venables’ watch.

In fact, Stutsman didn’t even speak with Venables before making his decision. The excitement was already building.

“It was really before I even had a conversation with him, I kind of already knew,” Stutsman said. “Once I heard the name that was announced, I just know his past history with linebackers and great defenses. I knew that’s something I wanted to be a part of.

“I obviously knew it was going to be a difficult challenge – I know he has a very high standard, which is kind of what he’s built this culture on. But I loved that challenge. I loved what it brings, and I love the hard work that he’s brought into this culture.”
