Danny Stutsman calls out fans giving up on Oklahoma
Before you could blink, Oklahoma was down 21-0 in Norman. South Carolina fed off turnovers from Michael Hawkins early and eventually cruised to a 33-9 win — a potential new low for the Sooners. Head coach Brent Venables has strung together a few tough results and Saturday may have been the lowest of the bunch.
Questions have been asked about Venables’ job moving forward following the loss, potentially losing a part of the fanbase to frustration. Linebacker Danny Stustman was asked for a message to those people, with him wondering if they are fans if giving up on the team is their mindset moving forward.
“We’re just going to keep fighting,” Stutsman said. “At the end of the day, there is no quit in this team. At the end of the day, I love every single person on this team, I love the fans. But if they’re not going to be with us were they really fans to begin with?”
Sooner fans are not used to this level of play from the program, usually being one of the best teams in college football. Offensive struggles have been a big topic all season but once starting SEC play, the close wins have turned into blowout losses.
South Carolina was not the only one, as Tennessee and Texas had their way with Oklahoma as well. Stutsman and the defense were thought to be one of the best units in the country but have not been able to overcome bad offense. Had it not been for a defensive play against Auburn — a pick-six in the fourth quarter from Kip Lewis — OU would be looking at a 0-4 record in conference play.
Next on the schedule are the Ole Miss Rebels, the second road game Oklahoma will play in the SEC. Stutsman wants to keep fighting alongside his teammates, hoping to stack a few wins. He expects the fans to be there with them along the entire way, no matter the overall results.
