Conner Weigman injury update: Texas A&M QB’s status officially determined vs. Florida

Conner Weigman injury update: Texas A&M QB’s status officially determined vs. Florida

Marcel Reed will start at quarterback for Texas A&M in Saturday’s game against Florida, Mike Elko said on the ABC broadcast. Conner Weigman was deemed a game-time decision and will likely serve in a backup role.

Weigman appeared on Texas A&M’s availability report Thursday night ahead of the matchup against Florida. He then came in as a game-time decision on the final report Saturday morning, and Elko said the Aggies decided on Reed as the starter after warmups.

“We’re gonna go with Marcel Reed,” Elko told Katie George ahead of kickoff. “I think Conner’s gonna be ready in some type of backup form. We just felt like watching pregame that Marcel’s our guy today.”

George later provided more context on Weigman’s injury early in the first quarter. He suffered a shoulder injury in the season opener against Notre Dame and played through it last week against McNeese State. However, he had a flare-up in the lead-up to the Florida game and ultimately couldn’t go Saturday.

“Conner Weigman, he’s dealing with an AC sprain in his throwing shoulder,” George said. “It’s an injury he suffered against Notre Dame Week 1. He gutted it out against McNeese last week, but he had a setback this week in practice. They tried giving him an injection into that shoulder during pregame warmups, just to see if he could test it out, but ultimately they decided to sit him down and allow Reed to go.”

Reed appeared in three games last season under the previous coaching staff, including the bowl game against Oklahoma State. He threw for 361 yards in the effort and will now get the regular-season nod against Florida in a key SEC matchup.

Elko expressed confidence in Reed ahead of kickoff and said he’s ready to take the reins. The next step was taking the field on the road and getting a pivotal conference victory.

“He’s gonna go out there and play a great game,” Elko said of his expectations for Reed. “We’ve got a lot of confidence in him. He’s been preparing for this moment. We believe he’s gonna go out there and lead this team.”

Texas A&M took a 3-0 lead on the opening drive after a touchdown was taken off the board by a penalty. On the sequence, Red went 5-for-7 for 43 passing yards and rattled off a 31-yard rush of his own to help spark the offense.
